Jason Segal, Brett Goldstein and the cast of Shrinking on grief and humor
Catch up with the cast of Shrinking as they talk about season 2 and continuing to mix grief and humor tonally in a show that makes people cry tears of both laughter and sadness.r Jason Segel, Brett Goldstein, Christa Miller, Luke Tennie, Jessica Williams, Lukita Maxwell, Ted McGinley and Michael Urie all joined us to share their experiences in working on the show and with each other.
As writers on the series as well as actors, Jason Segal and Brett Goldstein spoke to how they found space in season two to dig even deeper emotionally and thematically after building the relationships amongst all of the characters in season one. A huge part of the show is Jason’s character Jimmy’s relationship with his daughter Alice, played by Lukita Maxwell. They shared what it’s like to play father and daughter on the show in a relationship which at times has Alice acting as the parent to her father.
Christa Miller also works as a Music Supervisor on several of the episodes and shared her process in how she comes up with a list of potential songs before filming begins but always remains open and adaptable to new ideas.
Jessica Williams credits the writing on the show to the breadth and depth of her show ensuring that the character has never felt two dimensional. Luke Tennie spoke to his characters journey this season being pulled between his past and the present, a theme that several of the cast found present in their storylines.
