Kathryn Hahn on the many complexities of Agatha in Agatha All Along

Kathryn Hahn joined us to talk all about her leading role as Agatha Harkness in Agatha All Along following her turn playing the character in the Disney+ series Wandavision and being part of the Marvel universe.

Kathryn loved the opportunity to take a character she had played previously and redevelop her into this story, noting that in Wandavision Agatha is more performative due to the storyline. In taking on the role she worked with a movement coach to determine Agatha’s movements with her power and in particular what it looks like when she no longer has her power as well.

Following the reveal of Teen’s identity in the series as Billy Maximoff she shared that there is a sense of pride Agatha feels in seeing how he has survived and the tenacity he found within himself to do so, noting this is the little boy she used to babysit.

Being a part of a coven is a complicated experience for Agatha who previously took the lives of her past coven and so she found there to be a constant push and pull in needing people around her but not wanting to. When it came to the moment where she was absorbing Alice’s power she noted that this wasn’t something Agatha wanted to do but was part of how she isn’t able to control her own power.

In discussing the long history between Agatha and Rio Hahn noted that they have likely existed in a repeating cycle for centuries with one and other and that ‘she doesn’t want to love or care about this person, but can’t help it.’ This informed a lot of their scenes together alongside Aubrey Plaza since Rio is the one person who can see beneath the surface with Agatha and yet is also someone who has been a formidabble oponent to her over the years.
