Rebecca Hall on Writing & Directing Passing

Rebecca Hall on writing and directing the Netflix movie Passing sharing the development and scripting process and her relationship with the text over the course of several years. She spoke to how she wanted to create the freedom for the characters to speak to how it felt they should within the scope of the story rather than constricting herself to period specific language throughout.

The black and white styling of the film tells a story not only in terms of the visuals on screen but also through the myriad of grey tones and shadows this allowed her to create on screen and she spoke to the use of color in the costumes throughout the film

If you’ve seen the film already, you know the final scene is explosive and ambiguous and Hall breaks down finding the specific beats of how to capture this on film.
