Maika Monroe on the Surprising Innocence to Lee in Longlegs

Maika Monroe took time to speak with us about the process she went through to prepare for her role in the thrilling supernatural horror film Longlegs and the unique attributes of her character. Maika prepared extensively for the role, focusing on the physicality of holding a gun and working with director Oz Perkins to perfect details of the case. Additionally, she shared the surreal experience of seeing Nicolas Cage in character before meeting him in person, and the benefits this lended to the film. Maika highlighted that the tension in these scenes was heightened by the soundtrack and sounds, particularly her character’s breathing, that were added in post-production.

Although Maika is not new to the horror genre, she noted that in comparison to her own personality, Lee is the most different character she has played. In particular, Lee comes off as awkward and innocent, but is most comfortable in intense situations. Maika explained that Lee’s childhood had a significant impact on her decision to become an FBI agent and the suppression of her memories contributes to her rational communication style. She aimed to make Lee realistic by portraying her nerves despite her strong facade, and emphasized the character’s OCD tendencies and desire for perfection.
