Josh Tedeku on Bringing Full-Throttle Energy to the Screen in Supacell

We were recently joined by actor Josh Tedeku, who plays Tazer in the electric superhero drama Supacell on Netflix. In analyzing the script (one of Tedeku’s favorite parts of the process), Josh recognized his character’s lack of dialogue as a strength, and used the silence to create the character’s imposing energy. Though Tazer wields a dark and eerie energy in the streets, he is tender and protective with his grandmother, a quality that Josh noted would be a true-to-life core value to young men of Supacell having grown up in the UK.

The building of character dynamics began early on in the rehearsal process: As Tedeku mentioned, actor Ghetts (Krazy) helped to establish the power play between Tazer and Krazy at the first table read, greeting Josh with a firm handshake and reserving some of the warmth he showed to the other actors.  While they enjoyed creating this complex relationship, the actors were supportive and collaborative on set, as it was important to establish a familial energy between all of “the boys” both onscreen and off.  Teduku was grateful to have this energy onset, in playing a character who would “go full-throttle” in every moment, and did not back away from filming moments that he thought might be “hard to watch.”
