June Squibb, Fred Hechinger and Josh Margolin on the Poignant Perspectives Behind Thelma

We were joined by writer/director Josh Margolin, and actors June Squibb and Fred Hechinger for a conversation about the heartfelt, hilarious and action-packed Thelma. While the style of the film uses plenty of tropes taken from action movies, Margolin wanted to ensure that the film “moves with” Thelma in a sincere and grounded way.  For Squibb, she found that Thelma’s journey is led by her strength. While Thelma is mourning the relatively recent death of her husband, June intuited that the character probably did not get to have much independence throughout her life, and that the film’s big adventure is her chance. Hechinger infused his role as Danny, Thelma’s grandson, with a crushing sense of perfectionism, and noted that it is the way Thelma allows Danny to make mistakes that gives them such a deep bond.
