Siobhan Cullen on Shedding Dove’s Emotional Armor in Bodkin
We caught up with Siobhán Cullen to chat about Netflix mystery series, Bodkin. Cullen’s role as podcast journalist Dove required her to find the balance between stoicism and letting the audience in. With a character who puts up walls and amors herself against her traumatic past, Siobhán found it helpful to create a “slightly off” backstory for Dove, being that she is not entirely truthful with herself about her childhood (a truth that is reveal to the audience much later in the season). Though Dove is closed-off, her tightly wound persona does begin to unravel as the story goes on, which Cullen found was aided by her co stars' character arcs as well: While Dove wades carefully into sharing some tenderness with Gilbert (Will Forte), Robyn Cara’s Emmy unapologetically forces Dove to “go toe-to-toe.” Where the character begins the series wearing sunglasses on a cloudy day, Cullen found that Dove’s look signifies more openness and vulnerability by the end of the season, with her hair looser and “a few less buttons.”
