Barry Keoghan on the Balance Between Silly and Somber in Saltburn

We spoke to Barry Keoghan about taking on the lead role as Oliver in the film Saltburn and delving into the intentions behind the character’s actions. Barry discussed the range of power dynamics between Oliver and each of the Cattons, along with the dramatic shifts in his demeanor that occur as the story progresses. In particular, he emphasized Oliver’s complicated relationship with Felix and his own positive experience working with Jacob Elordi.

Barry expressed his gratitude for being given the creative space to improvise and convey Oliver’s profound level of obsession, specifically in the scenes involving the grave and bathtub. While the audience may have been alarmed by the absurdity of the scenes, he highlights that this is a testament to the depth of the character’s feelings. Performing the final dance scene was a challenge for him, but he enjoyed working with choreographer Polly Bennett and broadening his horizons as an actor.
