Phil Wang on his latest comedy special Wang in There, Baby!

Comedian Phil Wang joined us recently to talk about his latest comedy special Wang in There, Baby!  He shared how even the title was a conscious way to have audiences connect with his name as a performer which has always been part of his material including name drops.  He also spoke to his journey as a comedian from starting out in stand up at University and the way that this gave him the opportunity to experiment with different styles in search of his own voice,  With his last standup special being delayed in 2020 he felt that he had a different relationship with the material by the time he had the opportunity to record it, and as a result is proud to feel like Wang in There, Baby! is his most authentic piece of work released so far.  In writing his materials he often enjoys the non linear process of starting with the idea of a punchline and then working backwards to create the lead in to a joke.  Through this he often finds that there are moments audiences will find funny that he never even anticipated in his own material which is part of the fun and surprise of performing.  For his special he had the opportunity to film at The Globe theater in the UK and loved the sense of intimacy this created with the audience.
