Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall on Undercutting the Sweetness in Colin from Accounts

We sat down with Colin from Accounts co-creators, writers and actors Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall, for a conversation on crafting the delicate balance of a true dramedy.  Dyer noted that while misdirection is a common tool in multi-camera sitcoms, she and Brammell take care to give each character as rich of a world as the main characters, in order to ground their punchlines in authenticity. They acknowledged how tragedy often brings people together in life, so it’s no mystery as to why audiences connect to the series’ interplay of saccharine and salty moments.  Nailing the tone of the show is something that Harriet and Patrick often revisited after filming in the editing room, where selecting the winning take from the myriad of ways a given scene was played ultimately shapes the narrative.  On the verge of Season 2, Dyer and Brammall reminisced on how different the writing of the pilot felt (thinking “it would never get made”), and are excited to throw some hilarious new material at an eager cast.
