Showrunner Robin Veith and Actor Melanie Lynskey on the Real Life Story of “Candy”

We had the chance to speak to co-creator & showrunner Robin Veith and actor Melanie Lynskey about their recent collaboration on the Hulu series Candy. With Melanie playing the character of Betty who was killed, the two of them wanted to create a lot of sensitivity in how they told this true crime story on screen. It was important to both of them to tell the story in a way which gave Betty a voice, as much as it was about exploring what could have possibly happened in real life.

Lysnkey found herself incredibly connected to her character and had a lot of sympathy for her vulnerabilities but also didn’t want to play her in a way where she wasn’t an active participant in her own life just because she was a quieter person.

For Robin Veith, one of the biggest questions she had to ask herself was whether to show the act of violence on screen or not and she spoke to not only how she landed on the decision to include this but also why she wanted to tell it fully from Candy’s perspective and details they had to hand from the court transcripts.
