Ali Hahn on The Diplomat and Agatha All Along

Ali Ahn spoke with us about her current roles in both the Netflix tv series The Diplomat as well as the Disney+ series Agatha All Along. Whilst she found both are roles where she gets the chance to play characters who are a little more guarded on the outside they have a multitude of differences to one and other.

Over the course of playing Eidre for two seasons in The Diplomat, she’s found that the biggest challenge is the balance her character’s emotions. Eidre is someone who keeps things mostly on the inside and as a result Ahn always wants to ensure she is still emoting enough and allowing enough to the surface. Coming into season two she loved the level of comfort with the character but also getting to see her unbalanced after Eidre and Stuart’s breakup at the end of season one. She spoke about how it meant a lot for her to let Stuart in and now with their breakup, Eidre no longer knows how to maintain control in situations and this created a lot of fun dynamics to get to play with for her.

In researching what it would take to play a Director of the CIA she found constant feedback that Eidre would be very good at her job to have risen through the ranks so quickly, and because of this she wouldn’t need to prove herself when walking into a room. In essence, Eidre is somene whose reputation precedes her in all of the right ways.

When taking on the role of Alice Wu in Agatha All Along, she was thrilled to join the coven. She spoke about singing the infamous witches ballad and how she went into the scene where singing this unlocks the curse Alice has been rooted with for so long. She also shared details behind the scenes of her infamous scene with Kathryn Hahn where Agatha begins absorbing Alice’s power and the trust the two performers had to place in each other in finding the right movements and motions to portray this.
