Paul W. Downs on Creating Compelling Backstory in Hacks

We were recently joined by actor, writer, director Paul W. Downs, co-creator and co-showrunner of the Max series Hacks, for a conversation on Season 3. Downs credits the series' comedic tone to their carefully crafted relationship between the writing team and the actors: By writing nuanced material for even the smallest of roles, they attract talent who bring A-level comedic chops to every beat. As Paul mentioned, his performance as talent manager Jimmy is grounded in his lived experience with those in management who wholehearted love comedy, film and television. He was guided by Jimmy’s desire to do right by his clients, and supported by the “odd couple” relationship between Jimmy and Kayla (played hilariously by Megan Stalter). Ultimately, the Hacks creator leaned equally into comedic structures that have withstood the test of time, and knowing when to break out of them.
