The Faustian Bargain At the Heart of Netflix’s Partner Track

We welcomed showrunner Georgia Lee and cast Arden Cho, Bradley Gibson and Alexandra Turshen of the Netflix series Partner Track to talk about how each of the main characters begin the series on the same track but then through a series of faustian bargains end up on different paths. The cast especially credited their natural chemistry in creating such a strong on screen dynamic. Showrunner Georgia emphasized to her writer’s room that she wanted each of the characters to learn that power comes from being your true self and how there are critical moments in the show when they are faced with a decision to sell their soul. There’s a deep structure to the series according to Georgia, where each character has to weigh what is most valuable to them, whether it’s the friendship at the heart of the show or making partner.

What made series lead Arden Cho’s character relatable was that even though she ends up hurting her friends or making mistakes, she always wanted to do the best for them. For Bradley Gibson, the crux of his character is standing up for himself despite the othering and the disrespect he experiences from his work place and his supposed best friend. When it comes to Turshen’s character, she mentions that it was more about reaching into another world to find meaning in her life beyond supporting her friends.
