Krys Marshall On the Real NASA Scientists Behind For All Mankind

We were joined by actor Krys Marshall to talk about her role in Apple TV+’s For All Mankind going into the third season and consulting with real life astronauts about the script. Krys started by talking about her auditioning process and how the casting directors of the show called her in to read last minute just as she was leaving from another audition. She spoke of the experience of tapping into such a technical role without any research and being forced to rely on her instincts to portray the hopefulness and vulnerability of her character. Krys talks about consulting with real NASA astronauts and working through the scripts together to answer any questions and make sure that all the science was accurate. She emphasized how the cast’s trust for the experts allowed them to actually free themselves in terms of the language and focus more on the storytelling.

Krys also shared how the showrunners created an environment where she feels like she has a voice as an actor. She mentions that this type of active communication is something she didn’t get to learn in drama school and how she feels like she’s able to “write” the story alongside the creators. She also talks about how much of an inspiration her character has been for her and has helped her demand more and negotiate her own truth with the world. Krys is hopeful that other women and other people of color other can draw the same inspiration from her portrayal.
