Joe Wright on Directing the Romanticism in Cyrano

Director Joe Wright talks about directing Cyrano and building a world of romanticism between its characters. He first saw an early workshop of Erica Schmidt’s stage version with Peter Dinklage and Haley Bennett immediately seeing the possibility of a film adaptation. He collaborated closely on the music in the film using pieces from the stage version but finding where to make adjustments for the screen. As well as the relationship between Roxanne and Cyrano, central to the film, it was also important to develop just as much of a dynamic between Cyrano and Christian as their friendship flourishes.

Q&A on the film Cyrano with director Joe Wright. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company.

Cyrano de Bergerac dazzles everyone with his ferocious wordplay and brilliant swordplay. However, he's convinced his appearance renders him unworthy of the affections of the luminous Roxanne, a devoted friend who's in love with someone else.
