Emmy Nominated Connie Britton on “the Luxury of Denial” in The White Lotus

We spoke with actor Connie Britton about her Emmy Nominated role on HBO’s The White Lotus and “the luxury of living in denial”. Working with Mike White on Beatriz at Dinner, Connie spoke of the subversive story there being a progenitor of her character and how the White Lotus feels like a continuation of those themes. She discusses how we’re in a cultural moment where certain people can be well intentioned yet be in denial.

It was especially interesting for her to contrast her character’s outer success in White Lotus with her inner anxiety and how her career in tech must have shaped her as an example of a woman who has broken through the glass ceiling. Connie thinks that her character also embodies the limitations, chaos, and blind spots that comes with that lifestyle and the impact it had on her family.

We also touched on the dynamic between her and Sydney Sweeney and playing a mom at odds with her daughter. Connie described Sydney’s character as holding antithesis of values and the pain of trying to overcome the fact that Nicole’s values were often negated by her daughter. There’s an element of disconnectedness but at the same time a way in the story for her to reconnect with her family and breakthrough.
