Ramón Rodríguez on Taking the Lead in Will Trent
Ramón Rodríguez talked to us to share his journey in taking on the lead role in Will Trent as well as stepping behind the camera as an Executive Producer and even directing an episode this season. One of the first things that struck him about Will was how much of his backstory and upbringing led him to be who he is today in the series. Through this he was able to understand how he tries to create order through his job and why it can be a challenge to let people be close to him.
The one person he’s always been able to be close to is Angie, played by Erika Christensen, and Ramón speaks incredibly highly of his experience working together with her as a scene partner. He spoke about how it had to be Will who turned her in at the end of last season because of their history together since childhood but also how it created such a painful fall out for them both.
At the beginning of this season we see Will at his lowest point, something which Ramón loved exploring as a completely different side to the character. However he rightfully pointed out that Will will always be Will, even in a sleepy suburb he can’t stop himself investigating the things around him.
One of the most important parts of Will’s journey has been learning to adapt and to let people see his vulnerabilities and this is part of the richness he has continued to find in playing the character.
